House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a common salary component for renters. Under the old tax regime, part of HRA is exempt from tax. The exemption is the minimum of three amounts: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic, and 50%/40% of basic salary for metro/non-metro cities.
